Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin that is easily broken down during cooking and baking.

Folic acid is found only in vegetables, the highest content of folic acid in dark green vegetables. Folic acid is essential for the production of proteins, nucleic acids, and red blood cells. Therefore, folic acid deficiency is manifested by anemia.

Women who are expecting and planning a pregnancy should make sure they get enough folic acid, as folic acid deficiency in early pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects. The daily recommended dose of folic acid for women of childbearing age (18-30 years) and pregnant women is 400 mcg.
